A Healthy Start Makes All the Difference
Bringing a new puppy or kitten home is one of the most exciting things a pet owner can experience. It is also one of the most important windows of time in your pet's entire life. Your Puppy or Kitten's First Appointment
We recommend scheduling your new puppy or kitten's first veterinary visit as soon as possible, ideally within the first few days of bringing them home. Even if they appear perfectly healthy, that first appointment is about much more than checking for obvious problems. It is your opportunity to establish care with a veterinary team you trust, ask all the questions you have been storing up, and give your new pet the best possible beginning.
What Happens at the First Visit
Your pet's first appointment at our Skeet Club Veterinary Hospital will be thorough and relaxed. We want your puppy or kitten to have a positive experience from the very start, so our team takes care to make the visit as calm and gentle as possible. During this first appointment, we will:
- Perform a full head-to-tail physical examination to assess your pet's overall health and development
- Check for congenital concerns or conditions that may not have been apparent at birth
- Evaluate eyes, ears, heart, lungs, abdomen, skin, and coat
- Assess body weight and condition relative to their age and breed
- Test for intestinal parasites with a fecal screening
- Administer the first round of core vaccines appropriate for their age
- Discuss deworming and begin parasite prevention
- Test for feline leukemia and FIV in kittens when appropriate
- Review your pet's current diet and provide nutritional guidance for their life stage
- Talk through spay and neuter timing based on your pet's breed and individual development
- Address any behavioral or developmental questions you may have
By the end of that first visit, you will have a clear picture of your pet's current health status and a roadmap for the care ahead.
Follow-Up Appointments
The first visit is just the beginning. Puppies and kittens require a series of follow-up appointments during their first several months of life to complete their vaccination series, monitor their growth and development, and address any concerns that arise along the way. These early visits are also an important opportunity to build familiarity between your pet and our veterinary team, which makes future care far less stressful for everyone involved.
