What is a Pet Health Certificate?
A pet health certificate is an official document issued by a licensed and accredited veterinarian confirming that your pet has been examined, is in good health, and is up to date on required vaccinations. It serves as proof that your pet is fit to travel and has met the health requirements of your destination.
When Your Pet Needs a Health Certificate
Health certificates are required in a wide range of travel situations, including:
- International travel to foreign countries
- Domestic air travel on most major airlines
- Interstate travel to certain states with specific entry requirements
- Travel by rail or other transportation services with pet policies
- Relocating with your pet to a new state or country
Even if your pet travels regularly and appears perfectly healthy, a current health certificate is a non-negotiable requirement in most of these situations. Airlines and border control agencies will not make exceptions, so it is important to plan.
What the Certificate Covers
During your pet's health certificate appointment at our Skeet Club location, our veterinarian will conduct a thorough physical examination to confirm your pet is healthy and fit for travel. We will review and document:
- Your pet's current vaccination status, including rabies and any other required vaccines
- Overall physical condition and confirmation that your pet shows no signs of illness
- Parasite status if required by the destination country or state
- Any additional health requirements specific to your travel destination
The completed certificate will include your pet's identifying information, vaccination records, the examining veterinarian's details, and an official signature and clinic stamp.
International Travel Requirements
International travel with a pet involves a higher level of documentation and preparation than domestic trips. Different countries have different rules regarding which vaccines are required, whether a microchip is mandatory, what parasite treatments must be administered and when, and whether quarantine is required upon arrival.
We recommend researching the specific requirements for your destination country as early as possible, ideally several months before your planned travel date. Our veterinary team can work with you to make sure your pet meets all necessary health requirements within the appropriate timeframes, but some international requirements involve treatments or waiting periods that cannot be rushed.
